The 13 Best Baby Formulas of 2020
Are you overwhelmed by all the preparation options available for your baby? You are not alone A walk through the alley of formulas in the store can cause panic among the most experienced parents.
In fact, there is no brand or type of preparation that is universally appropriate for all babies. And all infant formula sold in the United States must undergo the same nutritional and safety tests through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
This does not mean that all formulas are identical.
You can find a formula in three ways. Powder and liquid concentrates should be mixed with water before feeding your baby. Ready-to-eat bottles contain liquid preparations already diluted with the appropriate amount of water.
Beyond that, the options revolve around content. Most preparations are made from cow’s milk, but you can also find formulas based on soy and protein hydrolyzate for babies with intolerances or allergies.
Feared colic. If you begin to link your baby’s crying with what you eat, consider choosing formulas that are specifically designed to correct what is causing that crying.
But really: there is no indication that a certain formula improves your baby.
Instead, colic tends to disappear between your baby’s 4 and 6 month birthday. And the formulas for colic may not help if your child has an allergy. Therefore, it is a good idea to consult your paediatrician to make sure that nothing is affecting your health.
Gerber Good Start Soothe
Key features: Gerber says that Soothe has the “sweetness of breast milk” and helps with everything from excessive crying to problems and gases. It contains only 30% lactose that, depending on the brand, could relieve the baby’s stomach (although research is lacking). It also contains a mixture of prebiotics and probiotics.
Considerations: Parents generally like this formula, but some people think it can be a bit lumpy and difficult to dissolve in a bottle. Some say that Soothe has a bad smell and that their babies don’t like the taste and sometimes they refuse to drink it.
Does spitting become more than a laundry problem in your home? Formula-fed babies actually have higher reflux rates than breastfed babies. These problems tend to peak around 4 months.
There are formulas in the market that are thickened by rice. They can help reduce the frequency of sputum and not pose long-term safety problems.
Key features: As with other thickened formulas, Enfamil explains that its preparation complies with the recommendations for the treatment of reflux established by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It contains rice starch that helps thicken and settle better in the baby’s stomach. The manufacturers of this formula supported a 2003 study that showed that it could reduce the uprooting episodes in babies by 50%.
Considerations: You will want to talk to your pediatrician before proposing a thick preparation to your baby. While some parents swear that this is the best formula they have tried, others say that this combination really didn’t help the problem of uprooting their baby.
Those toots may be cute at first. But your baby may have a lot of discomfort with gas. Keep in mind that severe gas may be a sign of allergy or other medical issue. So, if switching formulas doesn’t help, head in for a check-up.
Enfamil Premium Gentlease
Key features:Enfamil says that in clinical trials, this formula has reduced gas and the problems associated with crying in just one day. This formula also contains a large amount of DHA to nourish and develop your baby’s brain.
Considerations: Many parents are happy with this formula and feel that it seems to help their babies. Some noted that they did not like the packaging and that the preparation left an oily residue in the bottle after feeding.
